The Tigertones are Princeton’s signature all-male acapella group, dedicated to great music and lifelong friendships since our founding in 1946. Generally consisting of between ten and 16 Princeton students, the Tigertones perform a diverse array of music – from old classical tunes, barbershop arrangements, and jazz standards to ‘60s classics, ‘80s rock, and modern pop. For almost 80 years, the Tones have wowed audiences throughout the country and world with our signature blend of impeccable musicality and incredible fun.
In 1946, a group of 8 friends sitting around (or under) a table in the Princeton’s Yankee Doodle Tap Room broke out into a rendition of the barbershop standard “Goodbye, My Coney Island Baby.” After deciding their singing deserved to be heard in a more formal setting, they declared themselves the Tigertones, Princeton’s newest acapella singing group.
Throughout the remainder of the 1940s, the Tigertones grew into one of the country’s most prominent collegiate singing ensembles, performing for dances and parties at colleges across the northeast. In 1951, the group travelled to Bermuda on their first international tour – a tradition that persists to this day.
The Tigertones continue to embrace the same pillars of brotherhood, musicality, and adventure that inspired our very first members back in the ‘40s and ‘50s. Throughout the past four years, the group has recorded two albums, performed in twelve states, traveled to ten countries, celebrated our 75th anniversary, and introduced almost 20 new arrangements – all while building friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.
